I received a book the other day that contained a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson within its pages:
"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friendship."
It is so wonderful to feel that someone believes in you, but it is just as sweet to find someone to whom you can give your trust!!
I'm a big fan of Emerson - Sandra got me hooked on his essays along with those of Thoreau. Some more jewels:
"A great man is always willing to be little."
"It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, ‘Always do what you are afraid to do.’"
"Every hero becomes a bore at last."
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us."
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
